With the many unique dynamics in step family living, where do you turn for advice?
Ron Deal has spent 20 years with local church ministry. He noticed that Resources for step families were minimal, and wrote a book to address this.
The average step family assumes that the Brady Bunch family is real. This is the “dumb” step family, believing that second families are no different from biological first families, with the same relationships and parenting and marriage all being the same. As long as people believe this, the results are incredible frustration for all. You can’t compare themselves to that type of biological family, when they are a different type of family altogether.
The “smart” step family is more real, exploring the dynamics unique to them, and what relationships will be different, and how to manage that “differentness”.
Here’s a little equation that Ron Deal shares with us:
Step families are complex. Complexity leads to stress, and stress thickens blood. The more stressed step families are, the more it divides them. Soon you see that mom and her kids are putting up walls between the step dad and his kids, if he has them.
Remember that you need a United Front before the children. No Teaming-up against one parent. Talk it out as a team (privately), and work that marriage into a place of priority, and at the same time parent the children as needed.

Yes, it’s impossible to imagine how hard it is to blended a family unless you have experienced it. If the husband and wife focus on their marriage, it makes a world of difference.
