Starr and Bob’s Testimony:
Bob and Starr met in church and fell in love. She chased him until she caught him and he ran fast! She worked for him, and she really wanted to endear herself to him. She learned from the best. Her Brannie (Grandmother) always said that if your boyfriend or husband loves to fish, then you should learn to love to fish too.
Anyway, Starr and Bob went on the mission field after working in the insurance field. They lived in Laredo for four and a half years. After this, they worked in Ministry all throughout Mexico. After some time they came to realize that though they could work well together, they could not get along well as a couple. They were both strong willed people and their personalities clashed! The Lord told Starr that she doesn’t know how to be a wife, and had been focusing only on work. God also revealed to her that she should study at a local Christian bookstore in San Antonio for at least eight hours each day to learn how to be a Christian wife. They learned from Marriage Ministries International in shared testimonies how transparency is vital to a relationship, and is the first step to healing a marriage.
As a couple, they stumbled, fell, and helped each other up when they slipped. It’s not an overnight process, but takes constant daily effort. It is now their ministry to share what they have learned to help other people, and this helps their own relationship since they refuse to be hypocrites.
It hasn’t always been easy. Over the years they went to a 13 week marriage class THREE times. Then they decided to give back and learned to teach. Now 25 years later they have their own curriculum, and have their own marriage radio show. In these ways they can bring people insight as well as some of the brightest minds in the field to their listeners.
Women need a sympathetic and loving listener. They don’t need their problems solved, just someone to hold them and understand. They like to hear themselves think. Men like to fix things and when they hear these problems immediately want to offer solutions. Men tend to leave women alone when they are upset, because that’s what men often want for themselves. Women chase after men when they see the man is troubled, because that’s often what the women want for themselves. Men can’t do without sexual fulfillment, and women-emotional affection. She wants to cuddle and it’s often non sexual. He show’s affection with intimate relations. If we understand what we need, and try to speak each other’s love language then it’s easy to initiate because we UNDERSTAND. It takes effort to learn, but when you know, you can provide the need/solution.
You have to have an interest in participating in something your wife or husband loves desires and enjoys doing. This is sacrifice and longsuffering. Not easy, but take delight in her (or his) enjoyment, pleasure in what fascinates them so much. Every sacrifice has its own rewards.
Your marriage is worth making a commitment to each other, to put aside bitterness or resentment you have been feeling, to get with the Lord on it, and help your family enjoy this family and holiday season. Talk about playing. Ladies, your husband needs a playmate… someone to have fun with, cards, games, pool. Be comical and humorous. Men, get off your tush and play with your wife! You may always be busy with your job and as soon as you get home all you want to do is rest. However you might be surprised if you can get away from your comfort zone in your recliner…you will feel refreshed. Your family relationship will be refreshed.
